Where do you want to fish today?

Just use this page to navigate through SSAC online. (Last Updated 2nd Oct, 2000: ref: new rod). Be sure to click any of the blue underlined text, as these are hyperlinks to sub-pages. Oh, and use your browser’s "back" button to come back to this page, as I was too lazy to put "back to homepage" links in any of the sub pages.

 Newsboard:

I have a new feature on the wall of my drawing room. In fact it is another trophy fish!! Take a look at it here.

It is virtually the end of the trout season now, and I didn’t do many of the trips I had planned. Oh well, it’ll have to be next year then… Anyone gets any good fishing ideas and wants to organise a decent trip, just let me know.

League tables for the trout season shall be posted soon (7th Oct) so please let me know of fish that members have caught, but not told me about yet (as if….).

Saltwater flyfishing: Luke & myself are conducting a White Hat expedition north of Scarborough this coming weekend 6th Oct. We are after pollack and colefish, plus any late mackerel (anything that is piscine and will take a fly really).

Year 2000 Angling Operation’s Calendar, Day reports:

Jan 5th, Grand Cayman trio; 3 fish of different species in one hour of casting!

March 18th Tanfield Lakes; Scrutters already gets a mention for the millennium fish.

April 8th, First Day on Laver, looks good, but quite chilly.

April 23rd, St George’s day fishing at Eleanour Lake.

April 27th, Star Carr lakes for some evening fishing.

April 29th, River Laver. A great day on a high water river, some very good fish indeed.

April 29th & 30th, Luke goes fishing with Remany and Dom respectively (Syston & Eleanour Lake). They report 3 rainbows for the 2 days' fishing. Dom not happy with ripping his wader on the Laver on Saturday, goes and breaks his nine footer at the "wrong" end on Sunday: that should serve him right for laughing about me breaking my nine footer at the "right" end in 1997.

May 1st, River Laver for a fishin' picnic ~ lovely weather.

May 6th, River Laver excellence!

May 13th, River Laver in dry fly bonanza! Some really fantastic fishing! It is days like these which make me feel a little sorry for those who don't flyfish!!!

May 20th, Wes & Nick report some catches of trout on the Mannifold. A pikkie of a nice trout was submitted, and it is now being duly displayed on this site. They didn't mention numbers, just that they'd got some whoppers and sent in this photo. For future photographs, please be sure to get shots of the best fish, and try to position the fish's tail in line with the butt of the rod, it makes a neater job, and helps for determining scale quite well. Is that Wesley's new reel in the photo?

May 27th. Luke & I went to see a flooded Laver; total shame, as the river was unfishable. However, we checked out the uppermost extremity of the river, and it does look good indeed. I have now seen the total extent of the water, and next trip (hopefully the bank holiday 29th) I shall hope to get to fish this water and get some nice photos onto the site.

May 29th. After seeing the flooded river on Saturday, a visit to a flood-recovered Laver on the bank holiday was a must. Nice to arrive at the water to see a clear normal current, and trout rising too ~ lots of them! Some ace new stretches of water up here too, well worth the trek up there through the woods.

June 10th. Just moved house, so first trip to Laver for a while: it turned out as a nice visit.

July 9th. Some testing out of new angling methods. Interesting tactics to deal with stubborn trout.

July 23rd. An excellent day out on the Upper Laver and a great day’s nymphing!

July 27th. An evening’s visit to Star Carr where the roach made for some reasonable fun.

August 11th. An evening’s exploration of a local stream that could contain trout.

August 13th. A quiet day on the Laver.

August 20th. Luke’s Brook fished, and some exceptional trout you wouldn’t believe!!! Also the rampant horse, and "poaching".

August 23rd. I popped down to my local N.Cave stream and had a look to see if there were any fish around. I was peeping over the bridge at the A63 section, when I spied a decent looking trout. It was over 1 and a half pounds, and I think it may have been a rainbow. Its back was very dark, with numerous small spots on it. I zipped over to my car and spen about 2 mins getting my rod, reel and rabbit nymph sorted out. When I returned to the bridge, the trout had disappeared. I looked downstream of the bridge, and spied a shoal of coarse fish of half a pound to one and a half. A couple of casts to them, and then one of them moved up to take my passing fly. I set the hook and after a short fight landed a plump dace of about a pound! Well well, my first dace ever, and on a RN of all things. Alas, I didn’t have my camera with me, next time maybe, as I saw a shoal of chub at around 2lbs, which should prove to be good sport indeed for the future.

August 28th. River Laver back down at the Beck Pool to Galphay Mill stretch. A really excellent day’s fishing, and some good action too. I also saw 2 kingfishers.

August 30th. Back down to Luke’s Brook for less than an hours angling. Pretty good really, my fastest wild leash of a pound average, and a 100% hook-up / landed fish ratio to be very pleased with.

Sept 9th. A thoroughly good day on the Laver. 25 fish landed, my equal best for a day’s fishing on this river. The last time I got 25 was in mayfly peak of 1998.

Sept 16th. Trip to the Laver with WJS: good fishing all-round, and a new game invented.

Sept 23rd. Trip to a very high Laver, Birkby Nab stretch: good fishing nonetheless.

Sept 30th. Trip up to Dove / Mannifold. I won’t write much because I’m not amused with seeing a flooded river second Saturday in a row. I got 3 trout and a grayling for my hapless efforts. Really bad luck to get washed out last 2 Saturdays of the season, especially so since I lost the 2 Mayfly weekends to flooded river. From bad temper, I deliberately chose not to take any photos…. Members reports
Members wanting to submit their day’s catch report should email in catch summaries. Please be sure to be fairly accurate, and only report "caught" fish as ones actually landed, not one’s that got away. It would be nice to include fly patterns and pools, but no skulduggery please.

Beck Pool in April. This is a great pool to fish in; where the Beck meets the Laver. I have spent many hours beside this superb pool, and I thought a photo like this would be good to show what the place looks like in early April. The angler is Scrutters, casting at a nice fish in the main current.
